Wat Phra That Sri Jom Thong ‘The monastery for those who were born in the year of rat’

Wat Phra That Sri Jom Tong, or the former name ‘Wat Phra That Chao Sri Jom Thong’, is a temple for people who were born in the year of rat. It is located on a 10-metred steep hill. People believe that it was probably built in the 20th Buddhist era. But, however, according to the temple’s appearance, it’s clear that the decoration style is something after the 24th Buddhist era.
The most important spot in the temple is ‘Phra Baromthat Chedi’. This is a golden-colored Chedi, looking so sparkling and gorgeous in the middle of sunlight. It is located on the mountaintop of Doi Jom Thong, which is the storage of Lord Buddha’s head relics. You will see the Chedi as soon as you walk through the white gate of the temple. Just prepare to see this stunning image!

The atmosphere around the temple is peaceful. You will see an old Bothi Tree in the area. This tree has been living for centuries, but still it looks so good. Every year, on 15th April, there will be a ritual called ‘Hae Mai Kham Bothi’. The ritual is all about proping the tree up, due to the belief that Bothi Tree is a holy tree. It protects everyone in town from all dangers.

How to get there
Wat Phra That Phra Sri Jom Thong is loacted on Chiang Mai-Hod Road about 60 kilometers South West of Chiang Mai town in Chom Thong district. To go there, there are two methods.
First, grab your own car and drive along the Highway No.108. You should find the temple on your left side.
Another way is to take a public vehicle. From Chang Phuak bus station just North of the old walled city you can catch a local bus that runs many times per day. The non air conditioned ride takes about 1.5 hours. A more comfortable and quicker alternative is to hire a private taxi. Most hotels are able to assist you with this, agree on the price before leaving. As it might not be easy to find a taxi in Chom Thong, it is recommended to book a return trip.
