How To Get To Wat Doi Suthep
There are several ways to get from Chiang Mai city to the mountaintop temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.To drive to the summit first head to the northwest corner of the Old City, easily located due to the moat enclosing the area. Turn left to head west from here on Huai Kaeo Road (Route 1004), and follow it a total of 14.4 km and spend time about 40 minutes to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
- By local taxi or Red taxi from the foot hill of Doi Suthep mountain. You can pick one up from in front of the Chiang Mai Zoo (40THB/person) and in front of Wat Phra Singh (50 THB per person). However, they will only leave when the taxi is full so allow a bit of waiting time.
- By car rent with drive from Chiang Mai City. Many Chiang Mai tour company or travel agent can arrange return transport via air-conditioned mini-bus
- By renting the mountain bike or Motorbike.
- By making tour from Chiang Mai to Doi Suthep temple and the other attraction nearby like Bhubing Palace (Royal winter Palace) and Doi Pui Hmong Village.
Note : The good news for all wheelchair users is that it has been made accessible. There is an elevator from the road level that connect to the cable car that by-passes the 306 steps to reach the temple.
Nearby Places
Wat Pha Lat is a hidden gem in the middle of the jungle. The temple was originally used as a resting place for people on the pilgrimage up to worship to Doi Suthep up on the mountain. Then the location developed into a meditation retreat and a monk residence.
The royal winter palace of Bhubing has beautiful, regal structures and extravagantly landscaped gardens for visitors to take in. The palace may not be entered but the gardens can be explored when the Thai royal family is not in residence. There is a strict dress code which must be adhered to when visiting this royal site.
