Huay Tung Tao Lake is a popular destination for relaxed picnic.
Huay Tung Tao Lake is actually a giant man made reservoir located at the foot of Doi Suthep. The shallow lake’s good for swimming and the grassy banks are are surrounded by little wooden huts for picnic areas, drink and food stalls plus the view are awesome.
The stunning scenery of this huge reservoir seems to be a highlight of Huay Tung Tao Lake. It is surrounded by wonderful nature and there’s a sand coast along the reservoir which is beautiful like seashore. Swim ring, paddle boat, and pedal boat rental services are provided in the area at cheap price. If you are a fishing lover, you will be attractive with the water raft that was provided for fishing activity. Besides, you will be enjoying a variety of activities such as a parachute jump, game zones, paintball, ATV car ride, and so on. Plus, you can spend a nighttime here as the hut and the camping area is provided.
There are several local restaurants around Huay Tung Tao Lake whereat their seating facilities mainly consist of bamboo cabanas overlooking the lake. Some restaurant’s menus are written in Thai but do have pictures which make it easier to order. The hut are free to sit in as long as you order off the menu and all the restaurants serve similar food including papaya salad and sticky rice, grilled fish, fried rice and noodles. They also have water, beer and bottles of whiskey available to buy.
There are also vendors ladies with colorful baskets wander around selling snacks such as fresh fruit, pickles and insects for 20 baht per packet or three packets for 50 baht.
If you want to get in the water you can also hire a tube to float around on the water for 20 baht. Huay Tung Tao is safe to swim in, making it the place to be to cool off in the hot season. Even if you don’t fancy a dip, Huay Tung Tao lake is a peaceful and pretty place. Nice to come to chill out, get some snacks, have a walk, ride a bike or leisurely read a book while safely housed in a bamboo hut sitting atop the water.

How to get there
Huay Tung Tao Lake is about 20 minutes from Chiang Mai city centre. you would drive north on the canal road towards Mae Rim, Just follow Canal Rd. to the east until you pass the Chiang Mai Convention Centre and then the 700 Year Stadium. The lake is about 2km on the left. Look for a large blue sign.
- By local taxi or Red taxi : You can also rent a sangthaew (the red pickup buses) to the lake and arrange a time to be picked up. This will cost around B400
- By car rent with drive from Chiang Mai City. Many Chiang Mai tour company or travel agent can arrange return transport via air-conditioned mini-bus, program should combine with Doi suthep temple or Mae Rim Area
- By renting the mountain bike or Motorbike.
