Tham Mae Lana is a cave in Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand. It is about 12 kilometres long, which makes it the longest cave in the country. To walk from one side to another, it requires over 10 hours!

However, Tham Mae Lana is really beautiful. There is water flowing through it all the time. Also, there are stalactites and big rocks around. If you want to walk around, you have to be careful and should wear boots or proper shoes, in order to move your feet conveniently. If you wear slippers or something like that, you may trip over the rocks or slip because of the water. You know that you can get wet from exploring the cave. In that case, wearing a trousers will also do your good.

You can go inside the cave by yourself, or you can hire a tour guide with you. If it is your first time there, hiring a tour guide will be the wisest choice.

You need to be in perfect health and proper age to explore Mae Lana cave. The path in there is not smooth. If you have some disease or injury on your leg(s), the exploration can be dangerous for you.

And, for your information, the cave should be accessible during winter and dry season, as the water level won’t be too high. It you travel during other seasons, the cave entrance may be blocked off by the too-high water.

Although the cave has a long way and requires hours to finish that, but there are two different programs of cave explorations. Just choose the one that you think is best for your situation.

  • The first program requires 4 hours and 2.5 kilometres for exploration. By choosing this program, you will mostly walk in the water and climb the rock.
  • The second program requires one whole day and 5 kilometres for exploration. This program is much rougher than the first program, as you must follow the darkness inside the cave. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight with you. Also, you should have a good eyesight and not feel dizzy, or you may collapse in the darkness and get worse.

How to get there

Tham Mae Lana is located at Ban Mae Lana, Pang Ma Pha District, Pang Ma Pha County, Mae Hong Son Province. Continue straight along the Highway No.1095, in order to head for the downtown of Mae Hong Son. The cave is only about 12 kilometres away from the downtown. That is not too far.

Keep driving until you reach the 152nd kilometre. From that point, you will see a junction. Just turn left to the Highway No.1126 for about 6 kil,ometres. Finally, turn right for the 1 kilometre. You will see Ban Mae Lana. The cave itself is about 4 kilometres away.
