There are many good temples in Thailand, but not every temples receive special prize like ‘Award of Merit’ from UNESCO.

In fact, it has to be said that ‘Wat Pongsanuk’ is the only religious place of Thailand that received this award in the year 2008, due to its valuable and old architectures.

Wat Pong Sanuk, divided as two different parts: Wat Pongsanuk Nua and Wat Pongsanuk Tai, is a temple in Lampang Province. The legend says, it was probably built in the year 680, when Camadevi’s son Anandayod travelled to Lampang to establish the province.

There are many amazing architectures at the temple. You have to walk around and see all of them. Don’t miss a single one.

  • White Naga-shaped handrails : They’re located at the stairway that leads you up to the golden pagoda. The handrails are quite rugged, but still look beautiful and valuable.
  • Thousand-God Vihara : The vihara appears as a brown pavillion, with 3-leveled roofs. A large golden pagoda is located next to it. If you get inside the vihara, you will find many Lord Buddha statues.
  • Khong Gate : This gate is a white carved work. It connects to the Naga-shaped handrails.
  • The lied-down Lord Buddha statue : You will want to pay respect to this.
  • The ubosot : The ubosots of Wat Pongsanuk Nua and Wat Pongsanuk Tai are quite similar, but Wat Pongsanuk Nua’s has golden Naga-shaped handrails.

It’s a nice idea to visit this temple when you’re in Lampang. Walk around, take photos, pay respect to things, and feel relaxed. Wat Pongsanuk Nua and Wat Pongsanuk Tai are the same place. They’re next to each other. See all of their architectures.

How to get there

Wat Pongsanuk is located in Wiang Nua District, Muang County. Cross Rassadapisek Bridge. Then, after you reach the intersection, turn left to Pong Sanuk Road. Continue straight and you will find the temple.

This marvellous walking street is less than 1 kilometre away from teh temple. Feel free to walk and shop for food, drink, clothes, souvenirs etc. It’s available on Saturday and Sunday, from about 16:30-22:00.

This is a kind of museum. It’s about 1.87 kilometre away from the temple. It’s a traditional style house. There are antiques inside. You can get inside to see them and take photos.
