Chiang Saen Ancient City is considered to be one of the oldest towns of northern Thailand, as it used to be the centre of Lanna Kingdom.
At the beginning, the town took place at Chiang Saen Low Land, with the northern side connected to Kai Sam Tao Town, the southern side to Chiang Chi District, the northeastern side to Muang Luang District, and, finally, the southwestern side to Fang Town.
As time went by, the town turned into ruins. If you visit it, you should see a lot of rugged stone architectures scattered around. These architectures are mostly old houses and abandoned temples. They may be old and not so beautiful, but they are definitely valuable.
Old things like these are true origins of cultures in the past. You should feast your eyes with them. They located in the middle of trees and grass fields. The atmosphere is quite peaceful and relaxing. Walking around and taking a lot of nice photos will be good ideas.

How to get there
Start your engine in the heart of Chiang Rai. Keep going along the Highway No.1, then switch to the Highwat No.110 instead. After you reach Mae Chan County, head for the path No.1016, which leads you to Chiang Saen Lake. Not so long after that, you should see the ancient town in front of you.

Beside of the rugged architectures, there are also some tourist attractions near the town, all of which you should see.
This is the land where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet each other. You can go on sailing along Mekhon River there. It will be nice.
It is a museum which exhibits everything you need to know about opium. Good place to take your children and grandchildren to, for their new opportunities of field education.
- Chiang Saen National Museum
This one is next to Pa Sak Gate. It is a small museum, but contains a lot of rare ancient items like utensils, basketries, and amulet.
- Wat Phra That Jom Kitti
This temple is at Doi Jom Kitti. Just travel to the northwestern side of the ancient town, then keep walking for about 1.7 kilometres. That is where you will find this temple. In the temple, a glorious pagoda on a square base is located.
