Doi Mae Salong ‘The heaven of tea lovers.’
As tea is an important economic plant of Chiang Rai, it is no wonder why there are tea products being sold at many tourist attractions. This is considered to be a large tourism income for the province.

Doi Mae Salong in the past used to be inhabited by the Chinese soldiers of Kuomintang Party. But Chin Haw people replaced them later and have been living in the area for years, until their village was named ‘Santi Keeree Village’.
Nowadays, Doi Mae Salong is a very beautiful tourist attraction. You will see how stunning the scenery is, as the mountain is 1,200 metres higher than the sea level. Little houses are scattered everywhere. That is a lovely image.
The climate at Doi Mae Salong is mostly cool. Therefore if you wish to escape from the super hot sun, then it may be your best idea. Just dress in thick clothes and go.
Anyway, the best part of Doi Mae Salong is ‘Oolong Tea’. Yes. The villagers grow the Chinese tea and put them on sale to live their lives. This type of tea is known to be extremely healthy. You will want to sip at least one cup of it. You can walk around the area and find a tea shop you like, as there are dozens. You will love the taste of the tea at Doi Mae Salong for sure. Each cup is guaranteed to be super fresh. It can also keep you warm, in case you start to feel kind a cold.
After your finish your cup of tea, you may want to see the tea fields. That is right. You can do that. Just feel free to talk to the villagers and ask them everything you need to know. They will answer your questions and take you for a tea plantation tour for free. Their tea plantations are millions square metres large. You can walk until your legs get sore.
Next, you should walk a little bit further, head for the entrance of the village, and see Nang Phaya Sua Krong trees. These trees are also known as ‘Thai Sakura’, due to its lovely pink color like those in Japan. You will love the moment of yourself walking under the shades of these trees. That is quite romantic. Don’t forget to take a lot of photos. However, they only bloom in winter. Be sure to travel in the right season, if you want to see them.
Lastly, don’t forgey to pay respect to Sinakarintra Stit Mahasantikhiri Pagoda, which is on the top of the mountain and 1,500 metres higher than the village. The pagoda was built and decorated with Lanna contemporary style in the year 1996, in the hope of bestowing upon the royal mother of King Bhumibol.
How to get there
Doi Mae Salong Mountain is located in Mae Salong Nok District, Mae Fah Luang County, Chiang Rai Province.
Start your engine in the heart of Chiang Rai. Keep driving along the Highway No.10 to reach Mae Chan County. After that, change your path to the Highway No.1089(Mae Chan-Ta Ton). Not too long, you will see Kew Talai Junction, which your should turn right and keep going until you see Doi Mae Salong in front of you.
Another choice, beside of using a car, is to take a green minibus at Mae Chan Market. The proper one should take you from Mae Chan to Ta Ton. Anyway, it will not send you directly to the destination, but you will be dropped off to get another vehicle instead.
Nearby Places
It takes about 1 hours and 23 minutes to go there. But it can be faster if the traffic is smooth enough. However, this palace is really worthy of visiting. It was the first palace of Princess Srinagarindra, the royal mother of King Bhumibol. It looks gorgeous in Thai-Swiss Chalet style of art. You can tour the whole palace, even in the royal bedroom. But be careful. The photography inside the palace is prohibited.
This large tea plantation about 40 kilometers from Chiang Rai city is one of the best known and the largest in the province. In fact the brand has 3 plantations in the sector but this one is the one that people usually visit (see map). At the top of the hill , there is a square building on the roof of which you have a nice view over the tea fields and inside there is a shop where you can buy Choui Fong tea of course and other products or you sit at a table and enjoy a hot or cold tea drink.
