Speaking of national parks in northern Thailand, surely you can never miss Doi Luang National Park, which is located in Phan County of Chiang Rai. This is a very beautiful national park and you should visit it at least once in lifetime.

Doi Luang National Park is another preserved forest area of Thailand. The northern side connects to Chiang Rai. The southern side connects to Lampang. The eastern side connects to Pahonyothin Road. And the western side connects to the road Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai.

Doi Luang National Park is very large, with over billions square metres. It consists of many types of landscapes, but mostly forests and high mountains. The highest part of it is ‘Doi Luang Peak’, which is about 1,694 metres.

For the forests, there are 5 different types of them, mixed forest, deciduous dipterocarp forest, evergreen rain forest, semi-evergreen forest, and pine forest. These forests are inhabited by a series of animals, for examples, deers, bears, monkeys, snakes, or some kinds of rare birds.

There are different waterfalls at Doi Luang for you to go and feel the cool water drizzle, for examples, Pou Gang Waterfall, which is the 9-storied waterfall and the first zone that you should reach when you arrive at the park, Wang Kaew Waterfall, Jam Pa Tong Waterfall, and Mae Yean Waterfall.

Attractions in Doi Luang National Park

  • Poo Kaeng waterfall: Turn west into the side road at Ban Poo Kaeng on Chaing Rai – Phayao highway (route no. 1) and drive for about 8 km, you will reach the 9 levels limestone waterfall with many caves. Water flows all year round.
  • Cham Pa Thong waterfall: Turn west into the side road at km 7 on Chaing Rai – Phayao highway (before arriving Phayao) and drive for about 16 km to the towering waterfall. This waterfall resembles the head of an elephant.
  • Wang Kaew waterfall: A limestone waterfall which is higher than Poo Kaeng waterfall.

Like many other national parks, when you arrive at Doi Luang, the activities that you can do are sightseeing, hiking, taking nice photos, or something like that. These will do you good. Especially if you are feeling nervous, you will want some relaxing activities at a national park, being in the middle of green trees to make you feel better.

If you want to spend some nights, of course, you can also do that at Doi Luang, as there are some camping spots and shelthers available for tourists. But you will want to make a booking before you go, or you will not be able to get anything.

However, before you go and have fun, you will want to know about the climate. The climate at Doi Luang National Park is mostly cold. The lowest average temperature is somewhere around 12 degree Celcius. The highest average temperature is about 34 degree Celcious. The best season for you to get there is during rainy season and winter. That is suggested if you want the best atmosphere. Just pack your thick cloths, get them ready before you go.

How to get there 

You should first start your trip from the heart of Chiang Rai. Then keep driving along the Highway No.1 for about 56 kilometres. After you reach Ban Pou Gang, you should turn right into the road which leads you to the park. Continue straight for about 9 kilometres. Finally, you will reach Pou Gang Waterfall and the head quarter of the park.
