The Golden Triangle Park Hall of Opium is located in Chiang Rai. It is a museum which exhibits everything you need to know about opium. Good place to take your children and grandchildren to, for their new opportunities of field education.
The whole place is quite large, with about 400,000 square metres. This is enough for the all exhibitions, from the history of opium to the troubles from opium.
The museum appears as a grey-colored house. You will definitely see the big sign written ‘Hall of Opium’ at the front. The atmosphere around there is quite peaceful, fresh, and relaxing. You may want to take a few photos before going inside, so that you will have evidences of your arrival.
Inside the hall of opium museum, there are many types of displayed items. Starting from the entrance, which is a tunnel decorated with spooky-looking scultures and blue lights, after walking along it for a while, you will enter the zone of history, which is the first zone.
At the zone of history, you should learn all fundamental things about opium since the age of Ancient Egypt or Ancient Greece. There you will also find the answer why opium was once legal in Thailand.
Finishing the zone of history, you will continue with the hall of photographs. This is a small hall but full of countless photographs and video clips that present stories of opium. You should take a look at them.
On your way, you will see a lot of big glass cases, which stores figures of humans. There are quite many statues around the museum, in fact. They originated from various case studies of opium, including the consuming of the narcotic. You should learn how dangerous it is from these statues.
Not only that, tools used for opium consuming are also displayed in the museum, same as an artificial bamboo house used for opium production in Thailand.
The last zone to visit is the multimedia room. This room is full of modern technologies, which will help you learn more about opium.
If you want to go to the museum, it is available on Tuesday to Dunday, from 8:30 to 16:00.

How to get there
Golden Triangle Hall of Opium is located at Area1, Ban Sob Ruak, Wiang District, Chiang Saen County, Chiang Rai Province.
You should start your trip in Chiang Saen County, before following the Highway No.1290. Just keep going until the sign ‘Golden Triangle Hall of Opium’ is located in front of you. All you have to do is follow the direction on that sign. Finally, you will arrive at the museum in no time.

Visiting the renowned Golden Triangle is a must to complete the trip to Chiang Rai province! This is the famous location where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet in the middle of the Mekong River. The Golden Triangle was formerly known as the world’s major producer of opium, which was later improved thanks to the works of the Royal Projects. Boats services are available to enjoy the view upstream of the Golden Triangle and to cruise downstream to Chiang Khong. The journey to the Golden Triangle would take about 40 minutes and 1 hour is required to travel to Chiang Khong.
This is only about 36 kilometres away from the museum. It is in fact a small cave temple under a limestone mountain. The area is surrounded with water, with schools of fishes swimming all the time. There are some monkeys around too. They are quite mischievous, but you can play with them. Lastly, don’t forget to get inside the cave and pay respect to ‘Phra Song Kruang’, a Burmese-style Buddha statue.
