Uncovering the Secrets of Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail through Trekking

The Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail in Doi Inthanon National Park in Northern Thailand is a popular trekking destination that has recently undergone improvements. The trail is managed by the local Karen people and is one of two nature trails in the park. With the support of a grant and assistance from Chiang Mai University, the Karen people have built bridges, stairs, and railings using bamboo and wood to enhance the safety of the trail near the waterfall. They have also placed educational boards along the trail to provide information about the local flora and fauna.

Having a guide is required when trekking the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail. While the trail is marked, a guide not only provides additional income for the local community but also enhances the overall hiking experience. Some guides may speak English, but most do not. The trail starts out relatively easy as it descends through a forest filled with pine trees such as Pinus Kesiya. Along the way, you’ll find informational boards providing insight into the local environment. You will reach the waterfall, passing greenhouses filled with marigold flowers, which are used in worship of the Buddha, before finally reaching the Pha Dok Siew Waterfall.

This waterfall is part of the Mae Klang River, which cascades down several waterfalls within the Doi Inthanon National Park. The source of the river is located higher up in the mountain’s forest and it flows into the Ping River south of Chomthong, passing famous waterfalls such as Mae Klang, Wachirathan, and Sirithan. The main road (No. 1009) runs parallel to the river until Ban Khun Klang. There is a designated swimming area below the waterfall, but it is only accessible if conditions are safe. Your guide will advise you on whether swimming is possible, especially after heavy rainfall. If you do plan to swim, it’s recommended to bring a small towel for comfort during the second half of the hike.

After taking a break at the waterfall, the journey continues to Mae Klang Luang village, which is home to the White Karen people. This village takes its name from the Klang River (Mae Klang), which serves as the community’s source of drinking water. According to local history, the Karen people have lived in this area since 1870 and obtained the land for the establishment of four villages. The villagers are known for growing rice, coffee, strawberries, and raising water buffalo. The walk to Mae Klang Luang village takes between 90 minutes and 2 hours, and upon arrival, visitors can enjoy locally roasted and ground coffee.

In addition to the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail, Doi Inthanon National Park also offers two other popular trekking destinations: Kew Mae Pan nature trail and Doi Pha Ngam. These trails offer breathtaking views of the park’s diverse landscapes and provide opportunities to observe the local flora and fauna.
