The story of the Tham Pha Nang Koi cave states two names: Princess Aranyanee and Kanongdetch, which were a love couple. Princess Aranyanee was pregnant and ran away with her man, as they were hunted down by soldiers. Just before they escaped into the cave, Princess Aranyanee had been shot at her chest. Soon she gave birth to her son. She also begged Kanongdetch to go away for his life. That was their last goodbye. According to the legend, Princess Aranyanee wait for Kanongdetch for a very long time, so long that her body transformed into stone. That’s where the name ‘Nang Koi’ came from. Nang means ‘lady or woman’ in English. Koi means ‘wait’.

How to get there

Just take the Highway 101. Continue straight and turn left at the 58th or 59th kilometre. Then keep going for another 800 metres. It won’t be too long, as the cave is only 34 kilometres from the heart of Phrae.
