The highlights of Wats Phumin are…

Murals of Wat Phumin was under a major restoration in the period of Chao Ananta Worarithidet in 1867 (the end of the reign of King Rama IV), taking up to 7 years. There are many interesting murals such as Pu Man and Ya Man, which are words for calling Tai Lue men and women in the ancient time, whispering a conversation each other.

The man has a tattoo and the woman dresses up with full Tai Lue costume. This painting of the young couple is very neat. This painting has been hailed as a great beautiful painting of Wat Phumin so that it is known as…World’s Famous Love Whispering. There is also a painting of Yu Khuang Tradition of Tai Lue. In the past, parents would allow young people to meet each other at the balcony in the evening while the woman was spinning cotton thread or “Yu Khuag”. If the woman said yes, the wedding ceremony would be held. Each painting indicates the way of life of Nan people, trading in the community, young women weaving with a native loom. Outside the balcony, there is a small building where the clay pot is placed called “Ran Nam”, while the young men have a hairstyle called Lak Chaew or Mahad Thai.

At Phumin temple, it’s not only a religious place, but it also has a mural named ‘Grandpa Man and Grandma Man’ . It’s believed that if you confess how you love your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife with this mural, your love will be eternal.

To get everything correct, you must walk under the gate ‘Phaya Nak Koo Kwan’ in front of the ubosot. Use the opposite direction of clock direction. Repeat that 3 times. Then you can take each other’s hands and head for the mural, confess your love to each other, then, if you’re a man, you must state this poem to your love one. But if you’re a female, let your man state it.

The single building actually combines the functions of ubosot and wiharn (main worshipping and ordination halls), Pra Ubosot Chaturamuk (sanctuary with four gable ends) as the principal large Naga parading with carrying the sanctuary mound in the middle of the Naga-This sanctuary is assumed by the Department of Fine Arts as the first Ubosot Chaturamuk in Thailand, situated in the center, enshrined with 4 large Buddha statutes facing out to the doors of four directions, turning their backs towards one another, on the plaster bases as the statue of Buddha in the attitude of subduing Mara. Those who go to see the beauty of this sanctuary, no matter which direction of stairs they walk, will meet the face of the Buddha at all sides.

To the north side of the temple grounds is Khuang Muang, an open plaza area originally built for ceremonial purposes lying between the old royal residence and royal temple but also as a market and meeting place for town residents.

How to get there

The temple is located just in the downtown of Nan Province. Just continue straight, using the Highway 1080. Look for Mahayos Road. Pass Wat Suan Tan and then turn right to get to Pha Kong Road and pass Nan County Office. You will find the temple on your right side.

This museum should be visited by people of all age. It’s a traditional-styled house that tells stories of ethnic people’s life in Nan, through exhibition, including rare antiques. It’s even less than 1 kilometre away. Just go.
